China

(English version below the pictures) Wat een tegenstellingen en extremen. China, waar we door landbouwgebieden en vervuilde steden fietsten in het zuiden, door prachtige bergen rond Shangri-La, tussen de hoogbouw in wereldstad Chengdu, en treinden door de woesttijn naar Ulumqi en Kashgar.  Waar we ons vrij voelden op de fiets, maar in de file stonden met de bus op een bergpas en waar we 5 dagen tussen rochelende chinezen in de trein zaten. Waar we ontmoetingen hadden met (gek genoeg) heel wat Nederlanders in Kunming, Tibetanen in Sichuan, Panda’s in Chengdu en Uiguren in het westen. Waar de keuken per kilometer veranderde van Noodlesoup, via zoute thee met yakboter naar (live geslachte en bereidde) broodjes schaap. Waar je Boeddhisten, moslims, Taosisten, atheïsten en ieder ander geloof tegen komt. Waar we onze eerste keren wild kampeerden, maar ook (gedwongen) het duurste hotel van de reis hebben geboekt. Waar we zo veel behulpzame mensen tegenkwamen maar ook zo veel stugge (meestal geüniformeerde) mensen. Waar de natuur soms zo zichtbaar verwoest wordt terwijl er op andere plekken een hek omheen gaat om door duizenden (dikbetalende) toeristen bekeken te worden vanuit elektrische bussen of kabelkarretjes. Waar wij net zo vaak de toerist als de toeristische attractie waren.

China, full of extremes and contradictions. China, where we cycles through agricultural areas and poluted cities in the south, in beatiful mountains around Shangr-La, between highrise buildings in Chendu city amd where we trained through the desertto Ulumqi and Kashgar. Where we felt free on our bicycles, but got stuck in traffic, in a bus on a snowy mopuntainpass and where we spent 5 days with noisy chinese in a train.  Where we met a surprisingly big Dutch community in Kunming, Tinetans in Sichuan province, Panda’s in Chengdu and Uighur people in  Xinjang province. Where the cuisine changed per kilometer from noodle soup via salty yakbutter tea to (live slaugtered and prepared) sheep sandwiches. Where you experience Buddhism, Islam, Taoism, Atheism and any other religion. Where we camped in the open for the first time this trip, but also where we were forced to book our mod expensive hotel so far.  Where we met so many lovely and helpful people,but also lots of  (mostly uniformed) uninterested. Where the nature can be so visible exploited, but on other places is fenced off and visited by thousands of (well paying) tourists from electric busses or cable cars. Where we we as well tourist as tourist attraction many times.
